I am a big fan of these little birds! I know that they are generally found in Hokkaido, but where in Hokkaido is the best place to see them? Has anyone here travelled to Hokkaido for bird watching who can give some advice on it? Thank you!
Probably a Japanese ornithology forum would have a better answer, but Shiretoko mid-February to mid-March does seem to be general consensus.
I was in Hokkaido a month ago and we didn’t see any but we did get good looks in the Japanese alps foothills of central Honshu. It’s a different subspecies though and the Hokkaido one is considered to be cuter.
