Non-Basic Clothes in JP???

Does anyone know where I can buy brand-new fancy-ish clothes here? I live in Kyoto so honestly there isn’t much options irl.

I have a kinda fancy dinner with my friends at a hotel and want to dress nicely without breaking the bank.

If anyone knows any online stores where I could buy clothes (that are less conservative), I would really appreciate it!

  1. This seems like a post about shopping, maybe your question is solved by [the wiki page](https://www.reddit.com/r/japanlife/wiki/shopping)?

  2. Kyoto is a city of 1.5m people. I bet there are people dressing fancy in Kyoto. Have you tried going to a department store?

  3. I’m not sure what your standard is for fancy-ish clothes are but I would bet any decent mall in Kyoto would have some shops that fit the bill.

  4. “Without breaking the bank” is subjective, what’s your budget?

And coincidentally I don’t really get your Kyoto comment, the shopping areas in Kyoto are some of my favourite places to go haha

  5. Most of the big brands have stores in Kyoto. Depends on the style you’re looking for but foreign brands (stuff like Ralph Lauren and its separated brands) will have things.

You could probably walk around the Isetan in Kyoto and find something reasonably priced. Takashimaya is also worth walking around in. Generally those kinds of places let you cover a llot of ground at once compared to walking into a bunch of tinier stores.

  6. I think the keyword is online stores and less conservative dress. But not sure what is your budget.

Have u checked SHEIN and zozo? The clothes are quite conservative in zozo so maybe u can check SHEIN.

  7. It’s not so much about the brand but how the clothes ‘fit’ you. Cheap clothes can look fancy if they’re well fitted and appropriate. On the other hand, a person that just throws brands on themselves with no regards to fit or consistency looks tacky and weird

  8. Ah yes, Kyoto City, that weird hole in the wall where no one really lives, visits, or shops.

wtf? Almost every brand has a flagship in Kyoto, it’s literally one of the most visited destinations in the country, you can find literally everything you want.

  9. Fancy? Isetan, daimaru, etc. you’re in Kyoto, the place is full of fancy.
Cheap? Second hand stores. Second street, kinji, anchor, etc.

  10. Foreign online stores are the way to go, Bershka, Fashion Nova and Asos have .jp websites so you can order easily.

  11. It’s all up to your taste, but Zara between Kawaramachi and Karasuma Stations has enough fancy stuff that fits foreign body well.

Also check Osaka. It isn’t so far from you.

  12. So “not breaking the bank” is less than ¥10k…per piece? total for the outfit?

No mention of what kind of style preference or gender identity or size aside from “quite big for an Asian”…

I sympathize though as a short and round Asian-American comfortable in skater style but downgraded further to sweatpants and running shoes while working from home post-2020. Was invited to a “casual (wear black, don’t need a suit)” dress code wedding party recently but still (mostly Japanese) guests showed up in suits and stuff while the best friend of the groom and I were in T-shirt and jeans and sneakers.
