[This stuff](https://i.imgur.com/ItWUVUA.jpg)
Hi, just arrived in Japan as a student and trying to get a handle on keeping my apartment clean from the start. I’m not familiar with this kind of wall material so I’m hesitant to start throwing chemicals on it without knowing if they’ll damage it.
Photo is after scrubbing with a damp towel and wet wipes. It kind of wiped off the lighter stuff but heavy areas didn’t change much, and I assume just water isn’t going to prevent its return.
Seems like most posts are about the black mold in the shower and not this. It’s along all the walls in the single room I have. What are the recommended ways to clean it up and prevent it in the future? Should I be concerned?
Thanks for any advice.

Might be where something was glued to the wall at some point. Do you have pictures from when you moved in? If not, protip to anyone in Japan: take pictures the very instant you set foot in your apartment.
What was in the room before? Was someone cooking in there?
Could be just the adhesive getting cooked by UV light. If it is quite old, might happen.
Is this a straight line?
In that case it could be that they used cheap wood and the resin of the wood is seeping through the wallpaper.
Source: it happened to me
Looks like fag residue.
The cleaner could probably only reach so high.
