Remember vocabulary

I’ve probably asked this before and people have probably asked this before too.

How many of you guys are able to remember vocabulary and use them in speaking. I feel like I have a pretty good handle on vocabulary (1/2 done with genki 1) but only to the point of reading. When I try to recall to use it in a sentence I forget. Do you think it’s worth trying to memorize the vocabulary in the book or just try to get through the book as fast as you can?

  1. I experience this as an issue as well but most of my studying learning is all based on reading. I assume recall when it comes to speaking can be trained faster once you are able to know/read the word

  2. You can download Anki decks that have all the words in Genki. I try to memorize the vocabulary but skip words that I won’t use in real life, like the words associated with university life (e.g. major, dormitory).

  3. Typically, input (reading/listening) comes first and output (writing/speaking) comes later. The recall of vocab is a different skill from just recognizing vocab when you see it or hear it. You can force output early, but that’s easier done when you have somone to give you accurate feedback on your output attempts.

If you’re studying without the aid of a good tutor then stick mostly to input at first. The more input you get, the easier it will be to move to output later.
