About the 30% not covered by Japanese Health Insurance

Hi!

In a month I’ll move in Kyoto. Since my school fee (unlike the majority of the other Japanese language schools) doesn’t cover the 30% of medical fees not included in the National Health Insurance, I wanted to ask if is better to cover it or not. Also, if it will be better I cover it, do you know some good health insurance agency I can see?

Thank you!

  1. Wait, you mean a 30% co-pay? This is pretty standard across everywhere in Japan.

I got supplemental insurance through AXA but only for very major illnesses and extended hospital stay, where 30% can be quite expensive. But for everyday doctor visits, prescriptions, etc., 30% co-pay was standard and, because it’s a single payer system, the costs are already low as the prices have been negotiated centrally.

IMO you shouldn’t be looking for any additional insurance.
