what is different between seppuku and harakiri

  1. the main difference between Seppuku切腹 and Harakiri 腹切り is the way theyre spelled lol.

    As you can see, they both use the exact same characters for “cut/slice” & “stomach”.

    Its kind of like the terms buffalo & bison. Sure, there are probably historical differences between the words and specific-use instances that make one word more appropriate. But in reality, many people use the words interchangeably, and people will generally understand what you mean regardless which word you choose to use (unless you’re speaking to a pedantic biologist)

    Anyway, seppuku and harakiri are both just different ways of saying the same thing. Either word is correct, and which one you choose has more to do with which one sounds better to you.

  2. Same meanings. Also, we use 切腹(Seppuku・腹切り(harakiri)・割腹(kappuku)・屠腹(tofuku)・伐腹(bappuku )・斬腹(zanpuku).
