Weekly Praise Thread – 26 May 2023

It’s that time of the week again. Please boast and share about the good things that have happened to you this past week!

  1. Lost a whole bunch of money and my computer malfunctioned, but my wife got McDonalds. Ba ba ba ba ba, I’m loving it

  2. Maybe this is one of those things where I was the only one who didn’t know about it, but this week I discovered that sometime since I tried and failed to use the JP post bank app two years ago they totally refreshed the app and it’s now… Easy to use, modern, and convenient? I was able to set it all up with no problems in less than 5 minutes, and as if that wasn’t good enough I was able to switch to a passbook-less account all within the app. Feels great to be in the 21st century!

  3. My friend became my coworker (after I introduced her to my boss).

We got desks right by each other, together we went through paperwork and finished tasks faster than usual. So boss let us go home early. We dropped by a cafe to talk about fun days ahead.

    Love my job so much…

  4. Only have two small things,

    1. One of my students drew me Todoroki Shoto because I told her last week I liked him.
    2. One of the old men crossing guards learnt how to say “good luck with your work” for me in English.

Both really lovely, but also I clearly don’t have much going on.

  5. We’ve been watching the Back to the Future movies for family movie night the last couple weeks, and the first one is basically perfect as far as I’m concerned. It was fun to revisit a classic I hadn’t seen in a long time and share it with my son, who also really seemed to enjoy it.

  6. Ok, so it involves two days if horrific spiralling (not helped by work having a quiet period), but as a result, I have stumbled upon something massive that I will bring to my counsellor next week, something that will help me handle conflict and being misunderstood without turning into a ball of emotion, yayyyyyyy.

I shall now celebrate with a relaxing morning bath.

  7. New car delivery date moved up 2 months, praise baby jesus. It’s one of those hybrid models where they stopped taking orders entirely so if anything I thought it was going to be delayed.

  8. My computer at work was insanely slow, couldn’t even open an explorer window.

Mentioned this to my boss and he immediately ordered me an M2 Pro 14 inch MacBook Pro.

The CEO has a gaming laptop, and when I mentioned it, turns out he’s a huge CounterStrike player. Now he wants to play me in it, which is great but I haven’t played since 1.6…

I think I’m going to like this job.

  9. my rigid schedule rarely changes. i like how at worst i can just autopilot through the day. i’m not repeating one task for an entire shift, but moving between areas, floors, and bldgs in blocks of time, so each task inches me closer to break/quitting time. sometimes things impede my work and we’re expected to work around, come back, and at least try. if time runs out, the next day is rinse and repeat anyway, so not a huge deal. too many misses and i have the freedom to rearrange my “blocks” and ensure it gets done. i like when it happens; for instance today i moved a late morning task up very early, and it’s a nice reminder for my weary friday brain fog every time i log a report “oh yeah, i’m 10 minutes closer to lunch than usual!”

    what is my life? lol

  10. Got an offer to change jobs with a 60% salary raise and considerably less business travel days.

Just all around happy and excited. Game changer for our family.

  11. My permanently blocked nose seems to be opening up a bit, maybe some allergens are finally dissipating, so I’ve been sleeping better. I also woke up just in time for morning class, which I very rarely do. Then I had midterms, which was not as tough as I thought it would be. It’s been a good day so far 🙂

  12. I recently got a refurbished cross bike with the goal of commuting to work with it. It was kind of daunting since the whole way is on larger roads with 50kmph speed limits and 3 different hills. The one way trip is supposed to take 30 minutes. I have done it twice so far and no major issues, still learning the route so taking closer to 40 min.

Learned quickly that my posture matters to avoid neck pain and have had some cars pass by a bit close but overall a good experience. Not sure if I will be able to keep it up as the rainy season and summer gets going but that’s what remote work is for ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|slightly_smiling)

  13. I’m really enjoying teaching and all my students and fellow teachers are really nice to me. Long term I’m gonna eventually have to switch jobs just due to low pay, but for now I’m having a great time. I’ll probably stick around at these schools for a couple years.

  14. Husband has two consecutive days off, so we’re going for middle of the night karaoke! Just like our first date! I ended up crashing at 3 am at the karaoke on our first date because i hadn’t slept in 2 days, but not today. We haven’t been married that long, but i hope we’ll always be down to party with each other forever.

(no kids. I’d rather eat my own big toe than have any of those things, no offence)

  15. I appreciate my manager for never throwing me under the bus even when he’s given the chance. directors will point out little mistakes that I should have caught and that he trusts me fully to have corrected, but even then he never shifts the blame to me. when he explains the mistake to me afterwards, he’s fully understanding of why I would have never caught it in the first place (damn jijis and their convoluted Excel formulas with hidden columns).

  16. Thanks to everyone’s suggestions the other day, I was able to find some shelters willing to let me adopt a cat.

I will be doing some visits this weekend and hopefully find a cat that deems me worthy.

Also work is going great. Getting positive feedback from Japanese bosses and the HQ bosses too. Trial period ends in mid July so I’m hopeful!

  17. suddenly almost all of the problems for my work project are solved and its progressing well

pretty solid week, but i still have a lot more to do because when you solve one problem of course another will show up lol

  18. Found a new-to-me group I really like. I listen to a lot of new music, and that only happens once or twice a year.

  19. Big sales month at work, picked up a second motorcycle, got my new visa (three years baybeeeeee).

Next month I’ve got my birthday, meetings with old friends, a concert, and a pro baseball game planned.

May has been a good month, June should be even better.

  20. Dude forgot to ring up my Famichiki so I got it for free. Thanks bro!

  21. Mondial Kaffee 328 (high end coffee shop) opened a new store in Amemura today, as a pre-open special, everything is half off. Got me a damn good coffee and a huge chocolate chip cookie for 600 yen. So good!

  22. The weather has been absolutely beautiful here the past couple of days. Sunny, low 20s, cool sea breeze blowing in. Thinking I might just take off and go for a drive tomorrow to soak it all in.

  23. >!Bike was stolen. It wasn’t cheap (happened sometime this morning so couldn’t complain in time!)!<

    Got some Dunkin coffee grounds.

  24. Finally got a new job that might actually make use of my skills. First week has been really promising.

  25. Somehow I didn’t realize it was already Friday, and I had planned to go into the office on Friday….

  26. Matsue/Shimane was nice. Sunsets over Shinjiko are something else. Also some of the shrines around the area look like something straight out of Ghibli. I wish I got more time to just bumble around the place but it is what it is. I got to go to Izumo Taisha, and into onsen, and brought home an excellent local junmai daiginjo. Excellent trip all around.

I still have to wonder where the customer base for all the Snack/Bars/Yakitori in Matsue come from…

  27. Praise to Clean Crew. Not only are they an excellent cleaning company (I hire them for AC and unit bath cleaning), when I emailed them inquiring about a promotion, they called me back and REMEMBERED ME AND MY AIRCON MODEL! I was quite impressed.

If you’re looking for a cleaning company, I highly recommend Clean Crew

  28. ITS FINALLY FRIDAY ‼️‼️‼️ Lord. I just have to survive today’s night shift and it will be THE WEEKEND. I’m so tired and ready for it even with tests next week just not having to go to school is rest enough, fuck

The LED light I brought on Amazon. It was a while back but still I think it’s very cute sitting there on my wall being tiny and light enough to be held there with double sided tape but bright enough to read with

ORZOSAURUS and Gaki Ranger for having the crispiest most satisfying rhymes and flow I’ve heard thus far in Japanese rap

Pixiv doujinshi for being a good source of new vocabulary and being an entertaining and enjoyable way to practice reading 🙂

  29. I had surgery abroad a month ago and am returning home this Sunday.

I’ve had ups and downs battling depression and loneliness, but I’ve met some great people with whom I can be myself.

I don’t know how things will change when I return, but I hope at least that I’ll be a better person who is less afraid of taking the first step.

  30. I recently got my pregnancy keychain from the ward office. And I’m so happy that people actually offered me their seats!! It’s like 4 out of 5 times a week, when I go to work. People are kind.

  31. Almost missed my chance… I bought a house! Today! 10 mins out of Takayama, we take possession 6/1.

130year old Kominka, a bit of Reno work to do but in all it’s in pretty amazingly good condition.

We’ve had our eye on this place since last November so extremely happy to have crossed this line.

  32. I got home just as my wife and kids did yesterday, so I walked over to the car for the novelty of meeting there.

When my little girl sees me, she gives me the sweetest smile, says “Daddy!”, then goes “Blergagrgle!” while making a puking face.

She’s going to be a fun teenager.

  33. Went to the ENT today. He took some x-rays and told me I have beautiful teeth XD. Thanks, it took 8 years of orthodontic work to fix them and I’m entirely missing six teeth, so I try to take care of them. However, I am not sure how to communicate that in Japanese so I just politely nodded and thanked him.

  34. Slept through the alarm and the amazon delivery guy saved my day by ringing the bell just in time lmao 🤣
