Pension Wasn’t Paid

I moved to a new city a few months ago and the other day I got a message saying I hadn’t paid into the national pension system. That was news to me as I’ve been here seven years.

The payment slips with how much I am supposed to pay showed up today and total around ¥300000. Looking at the dates, it was all during the time I was with my previous employer who I worked at until January.

As I understand it, they should have been taking that money out of my salary. And as the pension office is only asking about the majority of two years and not six, I assume they did that for four years.

So am I missing something? Is this some paperwork error or should I be suspicious?

  1. Welcome to being an adult I guess? Boggles my mind when people don’t even bother to follow where their money goes..

Pension payment can only be requested for the last 2 years of missed payments (which means you likely haven’t paid for the last 6 years you worked there.)

This also means that if you ever take out our pension you’ll be losing 4 years worth of money. Don’t mess about with your future, you can voluntarily pay what you missed if you want.

That said, this will definitely put a damper on your application for PR if you ever attempt to.

No, it’s legit. Your company probably never paid on your behalf (newsflash, they don’t need to) but you’re required to confirm that with them. It would’ve been in your employment contract.

So, in the end. Unfortunately you gotta pay your taxes like every adult in this country dude.

  2. You’ve been working for 6 years, meaning you already entered “adult life”. I’m wondering, what were you planning for your pension ?

  3. Check if it has been paid or not first. Not to get your hopes up but they constantly make mistakes at the pension office, I guess it’s an automated system.

  4. What does your health insurance card look like? Did you pay for your health insurance through your company or to the city hall/ward office?

If you got health insurance through your company, maybe it’s an error because shakai hoken covers both. If you pay with slips from the government, then you were supposed to pay pension directly to the government.

  5. Congratulation, you avoided paying for 7-2=5 years. :p

About people saying you should pay pension for your future: Don’t believe that, be happy if you get any of this money back but don’t expect it. Consider it as an additional tax.

If you want to have a PR, you need 2 years or clean records. Don’t even try if it’s not absolutely perfect.

Normally your company pay 50% and you pay 50%. Those 50% you pay, may be deducted directly from your salary so you don’t have to pay the pension directly, but seeing your issue, it may not always be the case. If you have the 源泉徴収票, you can probably see it by looking the deductions on the taxable income.

  6. I know for sure I’d rather have 3 years left to claim basic pension than having spent 7 years spending every paycheck without any savings at all. Oof. You got done (by yourself).
