Good notebook for Japanese

Hello all!
I am starting a 10 week in-person course for beginner Japanese soon. One nuance I thought I would need to consider is a Japanese specific notebook.

Is anyone able to recommend a specific notebook, or at leaste the correct type? I was thinking dotted paper, but not sure if that’s correct?

  1. There’s a notebook called Genkoyoushi for writing practice. It helps your Kana and Kanji handwriting look consistent with size and form. It’s not meant for jotting down notes though.

  2. Japanese stationery is superb quality at popular prices, so go to a store when you arrive to choose a good notebook, pencil, and eraser.

Blue lined paper is fine although I would look to somewhat large spacing to make writing the new characters easier. Some Japanese paper is excellent.

Metal spiral notebooks are (much) less popular in Japan than bound notebooks are.

I purchased a refillable notebook with tabs.

Also, people typically use 0.5mm mechanical pencils.

Get a Japanese eraser too. I like the Pentel white ones for erasing. Pentel black (Aim) has less dust and lasts longer; it erases very well but the white one erases a bit better.

These are the typical notebooks students use to practice kanji. They are sold in stationery and convenience stores. There are different size and block patterns; smaller patterns for more advanced students.
