ISO: Korean restaurants with all the banchan (pickles and side dishes)

I had a lovely time entertaining guests in Shin Okubo last week, and it reminded me of all the incredible dishes I’d had at casual restaurants in Korea. While there was a lot of great food about, I didn’t come across a yakiniku place that prominently featured the different greens, kimchi, pickles, and other dishes that elevated yakiniku into something truly special. I wasn’t looking down each and every street mind you, so it might be right there – but I wasn’t seeing it. Can someone help me out with this?

  1. Not pickles, but [Kurumu](https://s.tabelog.com/tokyo/A1304/A130404/13155099/) does all you can eat vegetables. Highly recommend.

I don’t agree with the general premise side dishes (for wrapping) elevate yakiniku though. Quality yakiniku meat should stand on its own. Wraps are for cheap cuts. Both styles have their place.

  2. You just gotta keep looking around shinokubo. There are places that have it, they tend to be hole in the wall places off the main roads, though.

  3. Sorry that I don’t have an answer, but do you have any recommendations out if the places you took your guests? I will be taking friends there soon and I haven’t been in a really long time!

  4. At most yakiniku places you’ll have to order the banchan off the menu. You need actual Korean restaurants (not “yakiniku”) then they’ll give the banchan as part of the set meal you order.
