My current job sponsors my work visa which is set to expire in a few months. I have now found a new job that will fall under the same type of visa, but the new company will not sponsor me. Will it be possible to renew the visa if the job type is the same, but I lose the sponsorship?
Thank you in advance!

No, you need a sponsor to renew your working visa. If your new company doesn’t sponsor you then it’ll expire in a few months and you’ll need to leave Japan. I highly advise you renew your visa with your current before moving to the new company if you want to stay working here.
I’m assuming you’ve yet to interview with this prospective employer? Because no company in their right mind would offer someone on a work visa a position without intending to provide visa support.
If they aren’t offering sponsorship, they are more than likely seeking candidates who don’t require it to legally live and work in the country.
You just need a few document from your company to renew (unlike when initially trying to get a visa). I believe by law they can’t refuse giving you the required document.
