Is Genki worth the price?

Being an Indian and a 1 year at University, I do not have 40-50 dollar for Genki 1 or Genki 2
Tho there is TK guide to Japanese
Should I save up and go for Genki or should I just use TK guide to Japanese

What will be more effective and price worthy!?

Is it a complementary book to TK guide to Japanese?

  1. If you’re using Tae Kim, genki isn’t really necessary. Look into something like https://learnjapanese.moe/

I’m not really promoting TMW because of its immersion based tactics, but it teaches you how to learn Japanese for free and it has a large page full of resources.

  2. If 50 dollars is a considerable amount for you, then it’s not worth it at all. You can find all the same contents from Genki online and for free.

  3. Its unfortunate and I try not to support it, but if you really can’t afford it, you could consider a bit of piracy

  4. I recently sold my Genki 1&2 2E with workbooks, no writing in any of them, for 25 USD. It’s not something you can count on, but I imagine there are other learners out there who’d rather sell their stuff to another student directly at a fair price.

  5. well use free resources like Tae Kims Guide or Cure Dolly videos on YouTube. Maybe a library has a Genki 1 edition if there is one nearby or you can search for 2nd hand copies. They usually sell for quite a nice price (50%) depending on the condition.

IF you still struggle and want to have it – the internet is your friend. Ahoi pirate.

  6. if you learn best from books yes, but i learned more from random youtubers

  7. I bought genki only because my professor had it in her class rules. It was an amazing experience but only in class, outside of that I don’t recommend it for self study. Also needed the workbook for the handout assignments

  8. There are many people who consider doing grammar exercises a waste of time and who think that just reading TK is better than doing Genki, regardless of costs. While I personally enjoyed doing Genki I have to say that I absolutely could have learned the same things without it. Frankly, I think which one is better for you is mostly a matter of your preferred study style. Unless you like grammar exercises, I don’t see why you would want to use Genki, even if you obtain it for free.
