Alternatives to Netflix for Japanese Subtitles?

Given Netflix’s official password sharing crackdown in the US, I’m inclined to cancel my Netflix account entirely. However, I really love that Netflix offers Japanese subtitles for a lot of their shows and haven’t seen it on many other streaming services. Does anyone know of any other streaming services for Japanese anime/dramas that have subtitles in Japanese?

  1. All/most (I haven’t checked everything, but everything I’ve checked had them) Apple TV+ shows seems to have a japanese dub (one show I checked looked up voice actors and they are from Tokyo) and subtitles, including shows for children.

I speak 2 other languages and have checked subtitles for those (my native language having subtitles somewhere is surprising) and they are correct, so i’m sure it’s the same for Japanese as well 🧐 my japanese level is not there yet to check.

EDIT: these are not japanese shows or anime though, I’m sorry I somehow missed that part.

  2. Disney+ also has a ton of japanese dubs with subs. I really like watching old favorite movies and shows in japanese.

though the issue for non-japanese shows is that the subtitles dont match what’s spoken. so i mostly watch without subtitles.

    Edit: animelon

  3. You can still use a VPN with a dedicated IP with the Netflix crackdown but it will have to be your own personal Netflix account.

Japanese subtitles are pretty much exclusive to Netflix and Amazon for the most part. If you want the largest collection of Japanese subtitles, you can use Kitsunekko combined with Itazuraneko and kitsunekko for Japanese Subtitles. However, this requires you torrent or download the appropriate release from sites like nyaa.si (very easy and safe.)

Aside from that, Japanese subtitles are not included on home media releases in regards to anime. Disney+ with a VPN might have some JP subtitles but usually it’s a TL of the english version and not a CC (Closed Caption) of the Japanese dub.

Overall, I personally mostly use subtitles from kitsu and itazura with releases from nyaa.si and MPV as my video player, but I still stream on netflix from time to time with a VPN for convenience as well as for some jp subbed content itazura and kitsu don’t have.

  4. I think any of them has it, but the offer depends on your country of residence.

Prime used to have not a lot of language options, but they changed it and there’s a lot. Unfortunately in my country (Poland) there’s not a lot of native Japanese content there, but I think they’ve some non-Japanese movies with Japanese audio and subtitles.

I checked Lord of The Rings and Hotel Transylvania. Both have Japanese audio and subtitles option.

  5. If you can acquire the subtitle files somewhere, then asbplayer can insert the subtitles into nearly any video playing in your browser.

  6. Japanese Hulu has a decent amount of subtitles I think. You’ll need a VPN and it’s a completely separate company from US Hulu, so you’ll need a separate account. They mostly have Japanese dramas, if I’m remembering correctly

  7. I just want to say I’m in the exact same situation, I literally only use Netflix for learning Japanese because Netflix is one of the few, most convenient sources of Japanese subtitles. And like you, I’m really disgusted by their password sharing crackdown.
