Tokyo neighborhood options, w/ occasional commute to Meguro?

Hey all,

I work for a large American corporation and am relocating to a team in Tokyo, with an office in Meguro.

I am starting to explore potential areas to live and am looking for experiences or suggestions for neighborhoods/areas. Some things I’m looking for:

– I’d like at least 40sq/m, and am looking at a budget of ~200k yen/month, with some flexibility on price.

– If possible, I’d like a quieter area with easy access to busier areas (is there a Tokyo equivalent to Queens?)

– Restaurants/shops are more important to me than nightlife

– 30 min or less commute. As I wouldn’t be commuting often, I am less concerned about train crowds vs commute time. An easy bike commute would be a plus but not a necessity

– I have one small dog (15lbs). I am aware of, and have already begun the process of vaccinating/quarantining/importing. The company provides realtor/housing assistance and will work with the dog.

  1. Nakameguro. Close to Meguro, nice area with river, good restaurants, easy access to other places with Toyoko and Yamanote line. 40m^2 for 200k will be pushing it a bit depending on building age and distance from the station, but if you’re flexible there you should be able to find something. The biggest issue will be the dog, it may be quite hard to find something that allows pets. I have no experience with that so I’m not sure how much that will restrict your options.

is about 20 mins from Meguro & has nice restaurants and would have plenty of options under 200k/month

  3. Maybe somewhere betwen Takanawa Gateway and Meguro, or south of Shinagawa. Somewhere on the Meguro/Mita (subway) line. Having a pet + 40sqm preference would almost automatically put you in apartments north of 150k-170k.

  4. Easy access or proximity to Meguro with a pet and that rent ceiling will be tough. Not impossible, just tough. You might have to compromise on things, like being further from a station or being in an old building. If you allow yourself a longer commute by just 10 mins, your options open up significantly.

Also, where in Meguro? Meguro is big. Stations are more important to name rather than wards due to people being able to suggest areas on certain rail lines.
