Removing an old gas range and putting in a new one yourself

I have a gas range with the top part (three gas burners) kind of built into the kitchen counter and the bottom part (grill and knobs) below that, accessible from the front side of the counter. I’m sure you know what I mean.

It looks pretty easy to just take the whole thing out and put in a brand new one myself (assuming the new unit is basically the same size).

Would it be illegal to do that? Has anybody done it?

  1. It’s super easy. Be sure to first close off the gas supply. When you are done, add liquid soap to all the areas where there might be a leak (anything you touched) and see if there are bubbles forming after you turn on the gas again. If you see bubbles, shut the gas off again and retry or call a professional.

It’s super easy and if you take precautions you will do it right. Watch some YouTube videos. This is not rocket science but you still need to be careful of course.

ONLY touch the gas exit in your kitchen. Since there is higher pressure in the gas pipe than outside, gas will only flow out of the pipe. If you somehow manage to make a leak further upstream of the gas supply, you could get oxygen in your gas pipe and once you cook you will have an explosion in your gas pipe (though I doubt you could even access this without making a hole in your wall). So only touch the pipe in your kitchen (which is the end of the pipe) and you’re good.

I don’t know if it’s illegal in Japan but in the Netherlands it’s something you can do yourself
