I put my application in for ISI in Kyoto, do I still need a student visa to be considered a student for Japan travel?

I’m having a little bit of difficulty finding out the exact terms for getting into Japan in the coming months. My understanding is that the country is open for student and business, but that excludes any and all tourism.

I have been applying and waiting every three months for two years to get into ISI in hopes that I would be able to go in the following quarter. Unfortunately the country never opened except for an awkward little window about six months ago that didn’t line up with my work. My plan was always to take a ten-week course and feel it out to make sure it was everything I wanted, then extend to a year if it truly was.

The issue with this as an American is that, to the best of my knowledge, you don’t need a student visa to do the ten-week course, as it is under the 90 days for extended travel.

I have a meeting later this week with ISI about the June quarter, but I wanted to get started on the Visa process if the student Visa was required for entry.

Sorry, I know these questions are very run-of-the-mill in these communities and I feel bad making clutter, but I’m very nervous and excited about the opportunity and I want to be as prepared as possible.

Thank you for any and all responses in advance!

  1. Most schools require a 6 month commitment in order for them to sponsor your student visa. What you’re wanting is a tourist visa, which as you said, is not currently available. Feel free to meet with the school though.

That is incorrect under the current border situation.

The visa waiver for Americans is suspended. You’ll need a visa. Like /u/Talon-KC, it is *highly* unlikely that you’ll get a student visa for a 10 week course. Both the school and immigration will not be particularly willing to go that route.

There is effectively nothing you can do to “get started” on a visa other than collecting paperwork. You can’t apply for a student visa, the school needs to do it for you.
