Temporary national health insurance

Good morning all, I am leaving the country at the end of June and I have a question regarding signing up to temporary national health insurance. My work is requiring that I return my insurance card when I leave half way through June, which leaves me about a week uninsured. I have to return my CPAP machine towards the end of June and pay for it using national health insurance, my work has suggested that I can sign up for it temporarily at the ward office. Does anyone know if this is possible? Thanks in advance!

  1. Yes, you can visit the local Ward office and sign up for general health insurance provides by government.

However as you said you are leaving Japan by end of June, you also need to submit exit notification, that also needs to be submitted 2 weeks before the exit date.

Most likely, when you submit your exit notification, your general insurance would get cancelled automatically on the last date (the day you exit Japan), but it might be a good idea to discuss this particular case at the Ward office.
