Tips on using more complex grammar and differentiating answers

Hey everyone. As I’ve been studying, I’ve found that the grammar I use in speech is much lower and has less variety than what I’m studying. Further, when I take practice exams, grammar is my obvious weak point. When I get an answer wrong, I have usually narrowed the answer to two and chose incorrectly.

I am studying upper N4/ lower N3 level. When I study with my books or Bunpro, I tend to do pretty well with providing answers, but when I talk to my friends and coworkers or do test prep, I’ve noticed grammar is a massive obstacle. Any tips on getting past this barrier? TIA

  1. The grammar you use is the grammar you understand well. The grammar you are studying is the grammar you don’t understand well yet.

In my opinion the only way to trivialize all these multiple choice grammar questions is to develop an intuitive understanding of all the grammar in them and that cannot be done by reading explanations and answering practice tests. It can only be done by reading and listening to native material until it becomes second nature.
