Update: Finally completed identification check on Paypay

This is not intended as a brag but to help other people who are still struggling to pass the ID check with their Mynumber card on Paypay. After about 10 attempts, I finally got approved. This is what I changed.

Address: so it matches what’s on my Mynumber card. I originally wrote as 3-3-3 format but changed so written as 3丁目3番3 exactly as printed on the card. I also was missing some kanji in the building name so I corrected. If perfect, the address on the final check page should match the card including all spaces. Oh, and I also used full width for the numbers, although not sure whether this is important or not.

Name: I have a middle name but this is rarely included in the Katakana so omit this but be sure to include in the alphabet field and middle name goes in the first name field with a space in between. The kanji field does not let you use spaces so it is not possible to add a middle name. I was really confused that the system was trying to match the Katakana despite my name being written in alphabet on the card.
This is kind of obvious I guess but name order must also match, so last name followed by first name and middle name or last name followed by first name for Katakana entry. The name in the address field must also match exactly.

The reason it took so many tries is because the system doesn’t tell give you any hints as to where the errors are. Paypay could definitely make the system easier to use. The problem is that they rely almost entirely on AI, 😕

And support is about as helpful as a wet sponge.

Now just have to add a bank account but hopefully that is a bit easier.

Edit: sorry, the system is actually matching the name, so alphabet in my case, as it appears on the card but the Katakana you input must match what you registered on Paypay exactly. It appears the AI analyzes the photo you took of the Mynumber card and compares with what you have registered in Paypay.

UPDATE: Regarding claiming 5k points for linking a bank account as a payment account. You register this on the Mynapoint website or app. It has nothing to do with Paypay’s ID verification. TLDR: you do not need to verify your ID to claim all 20k points. You can charge your Paypay account at a combini ATM. I got the 20k points prior to ID verification.

  1. I gave up and decided they can fuck themselves, but still got all the free points and it still works fine.

  2. I’m still on the starting grid. I have the paper version of the Mynumber card and no Japanese drivers liscense so there’s no ID I can scan for them. (as Paypay won’t accept the 在留カード.)

  3. Paypay verification is such fucking BS but I want my last 5k points

The app is in general the best mobile banking, it’s just so stupid how you can’t verify.

    Thanks for the tip

  4. Never use PayPal’s live chat support! They are always either wrong or just trying to close your ticket.

Always call if you need a real answer. They do have English support in Japan, and the person on the other end was very helpful and even followed up with me by email.

  5. Holy shit. This actually worked. I failed the MyNumber verification so many times because I was trying to include my middle name in the katakana. It automatically picked up my full romaji name from reading the chip in the card, but dropping my middle name from the katakana entirely made the verification succeed. Thanks!

  6. I think they require the official government style for the address, not the simplified with 2-3-2. With the simplified, people omit some numbers as well, but it’s deliverable.

  7. You just have to scan your mynumber card using paypay app and it will be done in a minute. No need to fill out all those stuff.

  8. I gave up after the app failed to determine the thickness of my drivers licence(!) after about 20 attempts.

I got the app for the My Number points and now just use it to stash cash in the digital wallet. For all their talk about “cashless” payments, Japanese financial-service providers and vendors are only comfortable when you use cash.

  9. Can anyone break down the 20k points mynumbercard promised us? i think i got 5k points on paypay but the rest (15k) is for different services right?
