IC card recharging – How to identify machines that accept 10¥ amounts?

I’ve noticed at many stations, only one IC recharging machine in a row of many will support the ability to recharge cards in smaller amounts like 10 yen rather than the fixed 500,1000,2000 etc., even if they have the coin slot.

From a quick glance, I can’t seem to find any identifying features that would signify this feature. I can’t read Japanese, so perhaps I’m missing some special kanji mark.

  1. If they have a coin slot they’ll accept 10yen coins. They won’t accept 5’s or 1’s.

  2. [This](https://matcha-jp.com/jp/1981) should answer your question *if you’re in the Kanto region*:

    > 1. Railway companies that can charge 10 yen at all ticket vending machines: Tokyo Metro

    > 2. Railway companies that can charge 10 yen at some ticket vending machines: Tokyu Railway, Keio Corporation, Keikyu Corporation, Sagami Railway, Yokohama City Transportation Bureau, Yurikamome, Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation, Toyo Rapid Transit Railway, Tobu Railway, Hokuso Railway, Metropolitan New City Railway (Tsukuba Express), Odakyu Corporation, Keisei Electric Railway

    > 3. Railway companies that need to ask station staff: Seibu Railway

    > 4. Railway companies that cannot charge 10 yen: JR East Japan, Tokyo Monorail, Tokyo Waterfront Rapid Transit (Waterfront Line)

It doesn’t answer how to identify them for group 2 however.

  3. Could you tell which train company you are using? I usually take Odakyu and Tokyo metro and the machines that take coins are the ones you can buy paper tickets (きっぷ) from. You have to press the button その他の金額 when you enter your card and manually enter how much you want to charge. Different companies have different machines so idk about others.

  4. Just trying to understand the question:
You are looking for machines that not only accept 10 yen coins, but will actually let you charge only 10 yen ?

Like you have a card with 2000 yen, and you want to add only 10 yen, to make a new balance of 2010 yen? Is there a reason you would not want to charge 500 or 1000 yen?

I only ask because I have been using the subway since the passnet days (before pasmo and Suica), and never wanted to charge only 10 yen.

On the other hand, I absolutely want to get rid of my 10 yen coins by dumping as many of them all the machine will accept.

  5. Use the machines inside the gates meant for people to top up cards that are too low to get them out. Those nearly always allow custom amounts.
