Will Oppenheimer (2023) be released in Japan?

Not to be insensitive or anything, but I’ve been excited to see this movie in 70mm IMAX (Also does anyone know any theatres that show 70mm IMAX?) ever since it was announced, but I have not seen anything about it releasing in Japan shown anywhere. I was wondering if anyone knew if it would be released here since I understand why they would also choose not to do that, but at the same time I don’t think the movie would be glorifying the horrific damage and the disastrous consequences of the event.

But it is understandable and acceptable if they choose not to, I just want to know if anyone else knows anything about this.

  1. Yeah I haven’t seen any Japanese trailers for it so it’s highly unlikely that it will be released here (in theaters at least)

  2. Also interested to know. Big Nolan fan
I watched Tenet in Japan but yea this movie might be a different story for obvious reasons

  3. At the very least they will probably postpone for a bit considering July/august maybe a little too close to the actual dropping

  4. Poking around in Google a bit I found a Japanese story that said, “IMAXカメラで撮影の本作『オッペンハイマー』は2023年7月21日米公開。**日本公開情報が待たれる。**”

The bolded bit says there is no Japan release date yet.

  5. It will be released here, but there isn’t a release date yet. I would guess that they may wait for it to get some award nominations, which they often do with foreign prestige pictures to help with the marketing. Unfortunately, this means it may not come out until early next year.

There are other considerations as well, such as picking a window where it is not competing for IMAX space with other films, such as Mission: Impossible.

  6. considering the topic of the movie, I can see this movie never getting a Japanese release.

  7. considering that Nolan has like… signed a Tenet poster at Sunshine cuz it’s basically the only serious IMAX screen and he loves big screens, I’m surprised it’s not getting a day-and-date release here, even in limited form. I bet the fact that this is not a WB release but Universal makes the release process a bit different. Subject matter probably makes it trickier too, but it’s Nolan!

  8. They did not release that movie where Miyabi played a Japanese WW2 prisoner camp guard, forgot the name of it, so yeah the can decide not to release movies related to the war.

  9. Yes, it will get released but the opening date has not been announced. The domestic distributor is Towa.

  10. Almost guaranteed to come out here, especially if the movie does good box office, is well reviewed, or gets award buzz. However, expect it to be delayed just like lots of other non-franchise foreign movies. A drama like this could easily be months behind the US release.

  11. Been wondering the same thing, this movie looks amazing so I hope we can see it sooner rather than later.
