Health insurance question

Hi there,

I was employed in April (after graduating from uni here) and finally got round to collecting my 健康保険証 (the card reads 健康保険 被保険者証) from the company’s HR office. However, I also moved from a different prefecture for this job and when handling procedures at the city hall I asked to be enrolled in the NHI system.

My question is if I need to pay both the NHI bills (one of which just arrived) and the company one (which I assume is deducted from my salary), or can I not pay the NHI one? That is, if I don’t pay the NHI bills even though my company insures me, will I be ineligible for a PR?

Thanks.

Edit: Thank you for the answers. I’ll go cancel my NHI on my next day off. Cheers.

  1. Bring proof of your enrollment at work and the start date of that to city hall. You have to unenroll from NHI.

  2. The NHI is a fallback for people who don’t have insurance for work, you need to bring your card to City Hall and have them cancel the government insurance. (Don’t just “forget” to pay it).
