I just started learning japanese about a month ago and i know the basics so far.( both alphabets, basic grammar, a good amount of vocab, and a few kanji. my handwriting is also pretty good in my opinion). I’ve never been a fan of anime, but a LOT of sources say anime is somewhat fundamental to learning the language. As well as countless people saying it helped to improve their comprehension, listening, and speaking skills. i would personally be more interested in actual shows and movies though. I greatly appreciate any recommendations!
extra- I am not against anime, so i wouldn’t mind watching it if anyone knows any good shows.

anything not geared for children is going to be rough early on, but if you’re going to try, i’d aim at slice of life. i.e. things where there’s a lot of discussion about day to day things rather than filled with fantasy jargon. also ones where people don’t talk that fast or with a lot of slang
for anime that’s mainstream here, maybe shirobako, k-on, aria, or haibane renmei (a little fantasy but very little). maybe lucky star, tho they get slangy and make lots of word puns
virtually unknown here but super popular in japan: [サザエさん](https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%E3%82%B5%E3%82%B6%E3%82%A8%E3%81%95%E3%82%93) – extremely down to earth, domestic interactions, nothing fantasy or jargony or complex
there’s a ton of japanese tv programs on netflix. i think レンタルなんもしない人 was probably not too fast talking or complex, all things told. also here’s the actual person’s twitter that the show is based on: [https://twitter.com/morimotoshoji](https://twitter.com/morimotoshoji)
Honestly, watching some reality tv like Terrace House can be fairly easy to understand. The first episodes included a number of introductions and basic questions about each other. Be prepared to hear “すごい!” a lot as they tour the house.
