Any good places to move in to where you can cycle for leisure/fitness in Tokyo?

As title says, I’m finding places in central Tokyo where there are roads good for cycling. Do you guys have any suggestions?

  1. There’s a good, long path along the Arakawa. It goes from Tokyo to Kawagoe, possibly even farther but I haven’t been past that point.

  2. Follow the rivers up or down–Tamagawa, Arakawa (as mentioned), and Tone (if you’re farther north).

The other option is to get a bike bag (rinkobukuro 輪行袋), and hop a train out west somewhere, skipping the city riding. At certain stations you can stash the bag in a locker–tho then you have to come back to that station on return. Some folks ride out, do some hills, and then train it back (look up Hadano).

Strava has heat maps so you can see where people are going.

  3. In addition to the advice from other Redditors, the cycling route along the Edogawa is very popular too, although you currently need to detour for some construction work in Saitama. You can follow a cycling path all the way north up to where the Edogawa branches out from the Tone river.

  4. the Arakawa recreational path goes all the way to the mountains in Saitama. Lots of people go all the way out there to train.
