Book Recommendations please

Hello! First time using this group. I am a new student of Japanese. I am between N4 and N3 and my focus is on reading.

I just finished reading Charlotte’s Web 『シャーロットのおくりもの』 in Japanese. It was 219 pages, and written at a N3 level. I was told that this was the easiest children’s novel but it was very challenging. Lots of unique vocabulary about animals and farm stuff.

Any recommendations about similar books? Novels with some pictures are best.

  1. Honestly any native literature will be difficult. Back when I was around your level, I tried to read yotsuba because it was said to be “easy”, but it still kicked my ass, and there’s not much out there easier. If you want pictures and context to help you, I think it would be natural to go for some children-oriented manga such as the aforementioned yotsuba. Or if you just really don’t like manga, you could try Wan nyan tantei-dan, which a lot of beginners tend to gravitate towards. I read it probably 5 years ago so I don’t remember too much, but it was suitable for upper to moderate beginners.

  2. 余命一年と宣告された僕が、余命半年の君と出会った話 – I just finished reading this and it was much easier than expected and I thought it was great. There were still quite a few medical terms I didn’t know, but N3 level would be more than enough to enjoy it, in my opinion. And I don’t even consider myself N3 at all. There are two more that have been digitalized, and the fourth book just came out in paper back only currently.

This site is how I found it, and will probably be useful to someone else looking to find books at their level.
