Breakfast Restaurants Recommendations?

One thing I really miss about home (US) is breakfast culture. Outside of home cooking, bakeries and hotels I’ve had a really hard time finding breakfast options. Would be awesome if there’s an American diner style restaurant but that might be a big ask.

  1. Sarabeth’s is a pretty good breakfast chain

Eggs and things if you’re up for a little bit more Hawaiian style

  2. I’ve heard about a restaurant called “World’s Breakfast All Day” in Tokyo.

Other than that, would breakfast sets at gyudon places and Gusto do?

  3. There is a great place in Utsunomiya. They do western style pancakes omelets, etc…

We have some typical chains like Denny’s and Joyful that have a decent breakfast.

  4. Though not a diner, there is a super good chicken and waffles place in Chatan (Okinawa). The menu is even priced in USD and you tip! That should scratch your homesick itch.

  5. Streamers coffee specifically in tondabayashi Osaka. Their other branches have different menus but this specific one has a diner set with eggs, bacon, French toast, pancakes etc

  6. A lot of the 5-star hotels have great breakfasts. Of course, they are expensive as heck. Try The Westin, Park Hyatt, Grand Hyatt, Ritz Carlton, The Conrad, The Peninsula, Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons, Andaz, Edition, etc. Tokyo American Club or The New Sanno are good, too but you’ll need to go as someone’s guest.

  7. Flippers in Shibuya, Clinton Street Baking Company in Omotesando, and Buttermilk Channel in Harajuku help me fill this void.

  8. Are you around Kyushu? If so try Joyful the food ranges from decent to great but the unlimited refill of coffee and other drinks is nice.

  9. Eggs N’ Things is pretty decent.

They are in Harajuku I believe.

It’s not spot on and it’s a bit Japanified. But it’s pretty close to the money.

My problem is I can’t find good sausage (so dry here) and bacon (which is basically ham for some reason in Japan)

But yeah I can recommend that.

But if you go you should make a reservation cause it’s pretty popular.

  10. Little hipstery, but I drop by lug hatagaya for breakfast from time to time, also CIBI in sendagi. LOU is nakano is not bad too, though less traditional continental breakfast.

It’s either that or Jonathan’s and musashi no Mori for something cheap

  11. Ivy Place in Daikanyama. I’m not sure if you are in Tokyo but that’s where it is.

It’s a favorite for expats and Japanese alike. Used to open early but now opens at 8 for breakfast and you can get a great quality American style breakfast with all the extras like good coffee and fresh OJ.

  12. Ivy Place, Flux Cafe (Daikanyama), Le Pain Quotidien (Shibakoen), Bondi Cafe (Hiroo), or everybody’s favorite overpriced choice, World Breakfast Allday (Gaienmae)
Apparently Cedar the Chop House & Bar in Roppongi serves western-style breakfast but never tried it

  13. There’s nowhere in the city that has the perfect balance of price, portion, and offerings.

You can get very affordable Japanese “mornings” with super light breakfast fare.

Affordable but misses the mark on offerings (Japanese bacon instead of real bacon) or portions (small).

Expensive and good, but usually still not as good as back home unless they are very expensive.

The other big problem is convenience. Unless you live in some specific areas you are going to have to travel a bit to find a place and that makes it more of an ordeal than just a lets pop over to waffle house. it’s only 5-10 min away.

Breakfast was always my favorite meal to go out for in the US, and is something I pretty much only do at home now.

Edit: Also, anywhere that requires a long wait (Bill’s especially) is not worth that wait. The food is not *that* good.

  14. Bubby’s American Cookery had great bacon and eggs and the pancakes were really well done

  15. Denny’s scrambled eggs and french toast is the closest to a standard American breakfast I’ve found here. And that still doesn’t have proper bacon or sausage. I also haven’t found proper biscuits or grits.
