Thoughts on Netflix’s New Days?

Netflix recently released a show that focuses on the fallout and response from the Fukushima disaster. From what I can tell, it looks to be done in a similar manner to Chernobyl and it’s piqued my interest. I’m gonna start it tonight, but for those who were here during the Fukushima disaster and have seen the show, what are your initial thoughts on the series?

Edit: “The” Days, whoops

  1. Started out interesting but quickly became irritatingly slow, clumsy, and prideful.

    10/10 for realism!

  2. The title sounds like some colab, I was imagining all of those train station conbini’s having a Scoops Ahoy ice cream counter.

  3. I couldn’t stand the fake names for real people and organizations (eg. TEPCO as TOEPCO, PM Kan as PM Azuma, etc) why even bother? If it’s a fair-use issue then there were probably other ways to creatively get around it. Using a made up name for TEPCO felt especially jarring given the company is still the primary power producer for Greater Tokyo and continues to heavily lobby our government.
Regardless, all this care taken to avoid naming names just made it feel like the filmmakers decided to avoid controversy even though it would have made the film more powerful if they were addressing this still highly controversial topic head on.
    HBOs Chernobyl this is not.

  4. It reinforces all the suspicions I had at the time about the complete ineptitude of the authorities and their disregard for the safety of local residents.

  5. It is not bad. It is more realistic than Fukushima 50 which makes everyone look like a hero. In The Days, you can see the series of f%^k ups and finger-pointing that goes on when they are trying to deal with the disaster.

  6. Binged half so far, it’s good overall. I wish they spent more time also showing that the government was overwhelmed having to deal with the tsunami damage everywhere else as well as the nuclear disaster in parallel. It’s definitely a cross between Shin-Godzilla and Chernobyl imo.

  7. A bit concerned about accuracy… Netflix does not always have a good track records there

  8. For some reason the background music reminds me of The Ring film (Sadako). Feel bad for the workers exposed to radiation like no choice but stay.

  9. Before I watch, any trigger warnings to worry about? I volunteered all throughout the area (not in the exclusion zone) for an extensive period of time and I would like to watch but worried.

  10. The Days. Fuck sake Japan, get over the word “The”.

    Jesus wept.
