Moving to Japan and looking at money transfer options

Hello! I have a bank here in the states and when I get to Japan and open a bank account I want to make sure I can easily transfer money back and forth. Has anyone had luck with WorldRemit?

  1. I use Wise, personally, and it works like a charm once you set up your account.

Since you will be a Japanese resident, you will need your MyNumber card to register (the green paper card works too, as long as it shows your current address). This applies with any money remittance app, including WorldRemit.

You can link your Japanese bank account, and your US bank account, and use Wise to send money either way between your accounts. You can even use Wise like Venmo to send money to any friends who have an account.

    Hope this helps.

Note: Wise was previously called Transferwise

  2. If you only need to withdraw small amounts at a time, you can use your US ATM card in JP Post ATM machines. The only question is whether your US bank charges additional fees, but Charles Schwab doesn’t have any. This way you are limited to maybe 2000 USD a month or so.

If it is a large amount (more than 10,000) USD, a wire transfer might be best.

  3. Everyone I know here uses Wise. The fees are reasonable, usually not more than $10 USD fees per transfer.
