  1. Good. Animal welfare here is DISMAL across the board. Happy to see social media have a positive effect for once, giving stories like this more traction and making blatant abuse a little harder to turn a blind eye to. Good on all the people who filed complaints!

    >In a statement, the shrine confirmed it had “received various opinions” about the event but claimed the horses that had taken part had all received “appropriate treatment” in compliance with animal welfare laws. It added that horses had been “lovingly cared for day and night” in the run-up to the festival. It denied suggestions that the horses had been whipped or beaten to encourage them, adding that officials had been “puzzled” at the reports. The statement also demanded that people using social media stop “slandering” the event.

Mealy-mouthed crap. About what you’d expect from a group of old farts who condone this archaic stuff.

  2. Anyone want to place a bet on how long it takes for someone who didn’t read the article to reply here ranting about foreigners imposing their values on Japanese traditions?

  3. Oh look, it’s another “sacred ancient tradition” that as soon as actual Japanese academics look at it, turns out to have been entirely made up or completely fucked with in the 20th century.

(Presumably I am being downvoted by people who believe Putin when he says that Ukraine was always really just a part of Russia.)
