Not sure if this is the right place to ask but I might be going to my friends house and staying with her and her parents for the weekend before taking the JLPT exam in July and I know that in Japan when you go over to someone’s house it’s customer to buy a gift or something for the house owners. I am just unsure what kind of thing I should get to express my gratitude. Any thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated 🙂

Snacks bro
Are you coming from a different country or prefecture than where they live?
department store cookies
Every prefecture has their own special type of omiyage (you’ll find them in Donki, train stations and airports). Just buy a box of omiyage and you’re good!
Search for snacks they don’t have in their prefecture; i.e living in Osaka and visiting anywhere else in Japan, I’d take Rikuro
box of snacks from dept store basement. fruit from there is also good
