Accidentally paid pension as a student.

I live in Katsushika ward. I mistook the pension as health insurance and accidentally paid approximately 11 months worth of a pension. I know the price I paid on the top of my mind but I paid at the conbini in cash and now I lost the receipt. As I have a student visa, I am living off my parents for my short term study here. Is there any way for me to reimbursed?

  1. Have you applied for the student exemption? I am not sure how this work with what you have already paid, but that would be a good start and to ask the stuff about your situation.

  2. If you go talk to the office I believe you can get a reimbursement by declaring your actual status

  3. 100% sure you will receive the refund. Call the city hall, and they will send you the necessary paperwork.

  4. If anything, explain to the city office so you don’t pay for it anymore (student exemption), and if you can’t get it back right away, you can take it back when leaving the country iirc.

  5. Go to the city hall.

My friend didn’t pay when he was a student for a few years, then did pay about 300,000 yen in one sitting, and then he learned from me that you don’t have to pay as a student.

So I told him to talk to the city office guys, and he did, and got his money back.

However, it took several months. I would recommend going down there now with ID to prove you are a student.

  6. You have to pay eventually anyway. Students get a deferment (not an exemption) but they have to pay back those years within the next ten in order to stay on track for a full retirement benefit. It’s too bad there is so little education about pensions for young people.

Edit: if you’re not a permanent resident, you might be able to be reimbursed…but don’t get your hopes up.

  7. Did the exact same thing last year. I think I basically ended up calling the pension office to figure out the procedure, going there in person to do some forms, and then eventually getting reimbursed. It was annoying but it worked.
