Moving Across the Country While Visa Status Change is Underway

So I’ve recently accepted a job in Osaka, and am wrapping up the process of signing for a new apartment. The job is due to start in early July.

Here’s the thing — I applied for my visa status change (student -> engineer/humanities) in Shinagawa, since I’m still living in Tokyo and I’ve heard the processing times right now are out of control.

Since there’s a chance I’ll move before the visa comes through, will there be a way for me to get my new zairyu card in Osaka from their immigration office, or will I need to come all the way back to Tokyo just to pick it up?

Thanks in advance.

  1. Short answer: I don’t know, you should contact them based on the slip that you got when you applied.

The notice that the card is ready will come as a postcard, the paper that you wrote your address when you applied. And the card will be in shinagawa as well. If you don’t talk with them, that’s what’s going to happen.

  2. I recently moved inside the same neighborhood, and my PR application is in process right now. I called the office and gave them the application number, then they advised me what to do. In my case it was submitting the new Jyuminhyo to them by post to update my application materials.

Best thing to do is give them a call about your specific situation.
