I will be living in Osaka for 2 months for a study abroad internship. I just found out last minute that my internship office has been moved to Kyoto and I will need to commute daily. I already paid for my apartment which I really like. How long will this commute take? What is the cheapest and most time efficient way to travel between these cities? I will be working 9-5. I am ok with a commute that is less than an hour as I like the location and price of my apartment but if the commute is more than an hour I will consider getting a different apartment. The transit is confusing considering this is my first time in Japan. Thank you for the help!
Edit:
I will be living in this area: Shikitsuhigashi, Naniwa Ward, Osaka, 556-0012, Japan
My work place will be in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto

**Daily commute from Osaka to Kyoto doable?**

There are a few options, faster is more expensive: [https://www.rome2rio.com/map/Osaka/Kyoto#r/Train/s/0](https://www.rome2rio.com/map/Osaka/Kyoto#r/Train/s/0)
Unless your office is close to Kyoto station, you will likely need to take another bus or train ride + walk to get to the office. Instead of going to Kyoto station, with a little more research you might be able to find a direct route closer to the office.

The most logical course of action is to find out the address of their new office and put it into Google maps as the destination with your new place as the origin. Check during rush hour to get a worst case scenario. Look at the estimated length of the route and make your decision based on that. Just looking at the route from Osaka station to Kyoto station isn’t a good yardstick as other posters have mentioned, since you’ll have to get to and from each station as well.
That said, if you live close to Osaka station and your job is close to Kyoto station, you’re golden
Where in Osaka are you going to be living in and where in Kyoto are you going to be working
Totally depends on where you live at in Osaka ans where you will be working in Kyoto.
Both are large metropolitan areas.
Completely doable. I commuted from Osaka to Kyoto for work for almost a year. I got a Hankyu Railways commuter pass that stretched from Umeda station to Shijo and it took me about an hour total each way including the time it took to bike and park at the station.
I live near where you’ll be living and google maps is telling me it’ll take a bit over an hour and cost ¥820 one way. I hope you don’t mind crowded trains!
A lot of Japanese people commute from Osaka to Kyoto everyday, so I can say it’s possible and fine.
However, it depends on your life style and location.
If you don’t mind taking crowded trains everyday and spending about 50 min in the trains, yes, it’s doable.
You’re located near JR Shin Imamiya station. It takes about 50 min from the station to JR Kyoto station.
It may take about 10 – 15 min from the door to the platform, so totally it takes about 65 – 75 min at least in case your work place is right next to JR Kyoto station.
