Retiring in Japan

US citizen couple planning to retire in Japan. What kind of visa can they get? They have relatives in Japan who are Japanese. Any ideas?

  2. They have relatives, meaning Japanese nationals? Are they descendants of Japanese nationals born in Japan? There’s a specific long term visa (1-3-5 years, renewable) that applies to either 2nd, 3rd or 4th generation of Japanese descendants (each generation has slightly different conditions). I wouldn’t call that a retirement visa but definitely gives people of Japanese ancestry options.

  3. There are a lot of countries in Asia that offer retirement visas for pensioners, including Thailand and Malaysia (both popular choices), but I am afraid that Japan does not have a system for that.
