I would like to be able to talk to friends and family, as well as access bank accounts through two factor authentication, etc. after I leave. I originally planned to port my number to Google Voice, but that seems like a hassle, so I figured I would just get a new GV number and update my accounts and friends. Anything better than GV for this, and has anyone encountered any issues?
Also, if my GV number is US, and I have the app set to web/data, do I pay anything for calls/texts to US numbers?

Why is porting your number to Google voice a pain? It takes like, a minute. Then just wait a day for Google to port it over. Incredibly easy
I’ve read somewhere that two-factor authentication (esp. for banks) doesn’t work with Google Voice, because they can tell that your number is with GV and not a normal provider.
Here’s a link that says Google warns GV users *not* to use GV for 2FA:

Why don’t you just use Whatsapp, Line or Signal to talk to your friends at home and get a Japanese sim card?
