How did you learn N3 vocabulary?

Even in English (native speaker), vocabulary is a huge weakness of mine. I’ve tried left and right to improve my vocabulary in Japanese and it took me years to finish the N4 list on memrise.

So I want to know: what did you do to learn N3 vocabulary. I’m not planning on taking it per se but it seems to be a good logical next step for me.

  1. I’m not sure how memrise works as I haven’t used it before but I prefer to learn vocabulary in the context of sentences. I use an Anki deck someone created for the 単語N3 2000 book (I’m sorry I forgot their username but if you search past threads you can find out how to get the deck). I used the same 単語 2000 book series to memorize N4 vocabulary.

I also reinforce what I’m learning through immersion, especially reading novels and watching dramas.

  2. Learning vocabulary in isolation never really worked for me. I spent almost a year learning around 5000 words using a deck. I aced the deck but didn’t improve my japanese that much. Even worse, I almost didn’t improve my japanese at all.

N3 Onwards is better to learn the vocabulary of your interests. I remember I studied parts of cars, a japanese equivalent of that book u can get at the dmv to learn about rules and regulations and I read some mangas.

I also learned the muscles, exercise equipment, fitness stuff.
