Stressed about Visa Renewal

Im a South African citizen working in Japan and my Visa expires on the 1st of July. That in itself is no issue as my company has given me a Visa renewal package . All I need to do is fill in my part and take it into immigration with a photo and residence card.

Whats stressing me is my passport situation. It expires on the 30th of this month . But i applied for a new one in March and it will arrive In about September or August. Ive heard you can apply for an extension as long as the passport is valid at the time you make the application. But im still stressed that the wont like that my passport is nearly expires? How do I prove to them that my new passport is in process?

  1. You don’t have to prove it to them, they won’t care. They’ll take expired ones also.

  2. I had identical situation during Covid
I called the immigration (the one in Tachikawa) and they confirmed that even if your passport expires tomorrow and you’re applying for visa extension today then no problem.
And yes, it was no problem 😌

In addition to this, due to Covid I couldn’t get my passport before I got the visa. I again called them and asked, they told me that if I had any kind of document from my embassy which confirms that my passport is still in the processing stage and I have a photo of the old passport everything should be fine. I did as I was told and received my visa.
The only downside is that there is no guarantee that the person with whom you spoke on the phone will be the person who will receive your application so be ready to repeat the explanation of your situation.

    Good luck 🤞

  3. You can extend your visa even if your passport expired. Just need to write an explanation letter why is your passport expired.

There are probably significant amount of people living in a country with passports expired long ago, because there are countries without embassy in Japan, countries with totalitarian rules to renew your passport, etc.

    Do not forget your passeport.

Also, if you got the plastic MyNumber card, do not forget to go to the city hall after immigration put the stamp on your card to show it and get your MyNumber card extended along it.

With some immigration office being slow recently that could save you 1000yens.
