IT jobs in Japan besides software engineering

Hello, I’m wondering what are the popular IT jobs in Japan besides software engineering and development and what kind of tasks do you do. I heard the job titles in Japan mean different things compared to western countries.

Also, can a foreigner get an IT job that’s less techincal (like a project manager or auditing) if he is fluent in Japanese? Or do companies prefer giving those kind of positions to natives since it comes with more responsibilities.

Thank you

  2. I’m just a lurker in this sub and I don’t live on Japan or know the job market very well but try looking into cyber security or networking. Its a quickly growing field and it involves more conceptual knowledge rather than having to know how apply knowledge through code. I’m an ex computer science student who found cyber security much better and more interesting. There is *probably* a decent job market in Japan for it if I had to guess, but thats only because I know the field im general is becoming so important worldwide

  3. Great question, I would love to know.

It feels like if you went to uni to study coding you’re set for life in Japan and if you didn’t, well, you’re fucked to put it bluntly.

  4. Basically in a startup, there will be a hustler, hipster, and hacker. Maybe you can look deeper about hustler one….

But it still requires some computer things and design. Because it connects hacker and hipster with clients.

  5. Japan’s software sector is pretty short on UX designers, product managers, project managers, etc. In my experience, engineer is the role with the most locals in it; I suspect because that’s the only role with a really clear path from undergrad degree to job.
