Hiking Mt. Fuji tips

Hi all! My husband and I are traveling to Japan at the end of July. We’re planning on hiking Mt. Fuji. Any tips? Trail recommendations? Best time to start? What to expect? We live at 4,200 elevation so I’m not worried about elevation sickness. We’ll be doing some hikes around our city to prep before we go. I lived in Japan 10 years ago for over a year and I’ve been back several times since but I’ve never taken on the Mount Fuji challenge and it seems super daunting for some reason.

  2. I climbed about 10 years ago from Yoshida trail. Took a bus to station number 5 early in the morning and spend some time there. Bought the climbing stick and headed up at noon. By late afternoon I had made it up to station 8. Remember you will want to make stops and enjoy the scenery so give yourself ample time. Around sunset I had dinner at station 8 and had booked a sleeping area which is basically a mat and a sleeping bag. I woke up at midnight 12am and climbed up to the top. Wind was notoriously strong as it was the very last day of the season to climb Fuji. Hid among rocks at the top until the shelter opened up and we could hunker inside. Sunrise was around 5am and after exploring the rim I headed down the back way which is much wider and easier to descent.

    Unless you are a native of Peru, Bolivia, Nepal or Tibetan part of China and you live at 4,200 metres – you should still take precautions.

    AMS generally occurs only by rapid ascent above 2,500 metres (8,200 feet).

  4. I live sea level so I did a bunch of hikes with similar elevation prior. Reason is because I’ve experienced altitude sickness before.

    We arrived at station 5 at around 9. Hung around until I think 10:30 or 11 and started our hike. There was a lot of traffic up top, single line and slower hikers but we did make it in time for sunrise.

    Bring coins for toilet use. The altitude affects me and made me pee a lot.

    Bring warm weather clothes and cold weather clothes. It’s cold up top but hot during the morning/day when sun is out. Use walking sticks.
