Best place for men’s suits in Japan?h

I have been wondering which is the best place for buying two/three piece suits for men in Japan?

  1. Uh, it really depends on how you define “best”. I’m taller than anything off the rack in Japan, so for me it meant custom tailored at a high-end department store. For my son’s need for a school event, it meant something cheap at a nationwide suit chain at 1/10th the price. YMMV.

  2. The lowest end would be Suit Company, Aoyama, a tiny bit taller Comme Ca etc.

They have a wide variety in fabric and build quality even in these shops; it is possible to find a decent suit if you don’t expect a daily use.

As you go higher, all department stores will have good over the counter suits, such as Paul Stuart. Depending on department store the selection of suit stores will vary. Department stores usually have great deals on suits during the sale season.

For tailored suits the quality and price range varies quite wildly. Many different tailors, such as Ginza or Azabu Tailor will have quite affordable offers, however in the end it strongly depends on the fabric.

  3. If you are on the larger end of the size scale Sakazen Large Size stores are good. If you are regular sized I find they have decent fabric for custom made suits at Sakazen regular size shops too.

  4. Best for quality or best for price or…?

For price, Amazon. No joke. I just needed one a few months ago for a school opening ceremony. Hadn’t needed one in several years and kinda…gained some weight during Covid. Through Amazon it was great because they had larger than typical Japan sizes and I was able to order a couple, try them on, and send back what didn’t fit. Worked perfectly for something I won’t wear often, and including the white shirt it was well under ¥1man.
