Otagi Nenbutsu-ji – Kyoto

Is it possible to walk from Otagi Nenbutsu-ji to the bamboo forest? Looking at Google maps, there doesn’t appear to be sidewalks near the temple which makes me question if it is even safe to attempt to walk. I’m not concerned with getting to Otagi Nenbutsu-ji, I’m mostly concerned with leaving. I see cautionary tales of waiting an hour for a bus so I’m trying to avoid the bus. I wouldn’t be against using a taxi, just not sure how to request a taxi with my android. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

  1. No sidewalk does not mean not walkable the way it is in most of the US. Just walk. You’ll live. Report back on all the cute things you see in the neighborhood as you walk.

  2. There is a LOT of streets that do not have sidewalks in Japan and that does not make them unsafe to walk.

I think I remember that Google maps show something a bit strange about going to that temple, like making you do a long detour north, but that is also unnecessary.

  3. Yes, it’s possible and it is a pretty nice walk with quiet surrounding (before you reach Arashiyama bamboo forest area). We just did it last month.
