Struggling with passes, please help! 🤯

Hi! My girlfriend and I will be doing the following itinerary around Japan in August and we’re really struggling to figure out which passes to get that will represent the best value to us for the trip. Please could someone offer their help and advice, it would be greatly appreciated!!

30/07 – Arrive into Kobe Airport (UKB) @ 21:45 – train to Osaka
31/07 – Osaka
01/08 – Osaka
02/03 – Osaka – Day trip to Nara
03/08 – Osaka to Koyasan
04/08 – Koyasan to Kyoto
05/08 – Kyoto
06/08 – Kyoto
07/08 – Kyoto
08/08 – Kyoto to Kanazawa
09/08 – Kanazawa
10/08 – Kanzawa to Takayama
11/08 – Takayama to Tokyo
12/08 – Tokyo
13/07 – Tokyo
14/08 – Tokyo – possible day trip? (Hakone, Nikko?)
15/08 – Tokyo to Kobe
16/08 – Fly home – 7:05am from Kobe Airport (UKB)

  1. I’d just get the JR Rail Pass before the price hike and call it a day. It removes so much stress in planning, and really opens up more opportunities for you if you decide you want to do something not originally planned. Only transportation you’ll really need to pay for after that is the occasional subway or bus not in connection to the pass such as the subway in Tokyo or Kyoto, for example. I know it looks expensive, but the trains really do add up, and it looks like you’ll be taking the Shinkansen more than once so you’ll more than likely get your money back.
