Leaving the country temporarily on a student visa

Hi!

I’m a language school student in Kyoto since October last year. At the end of this month I’m going back to my country for a about a week and a half for holidays. I know I can get a reentry permit but I am a little confused as to when and where I should get this permit. I read (and heard) that if I am on a student visa and haven’t stayed in the country for more than a year after my visa was issued, that I can simply fill out a form at the airport and keep that until I come back to ease the reentry process. Is this correct? If so, since I’m flying from KIX, where in the boarding process do I fill out this form. Before security? After? If someone could walk me through the process that would be fantastic. Keep in mind I’m flying international directly from KIX, no connecting flight in Tokyo.

If I need to do something else, could someone please explain what?

I’ve googled this but I haven’t found a good explanation that I feel confident following.

Thanks for any help!

  1. Special re-entry permission allow you to be out of country for one year or until your status of residence expired, whichever is earlier. There are no restriction on how long you must have stayed in Japan.

The special re-entry permission just require you to fill the embarkation card, which is after security and customs, but before immigration.

You won’t missed it. They won’t just void your visa without properly confirming with you, so even if you missed it they will send you back. Don’t worry.
