Health insurance skyrocketed

Hello everyone. I’m an exchange student who has moved a few months ago from Edogawa to Nakano-ku. When I first arrived in Edogawa my monthly health insurance was less than 1000¥. After moving, I received a single insurance slip in may that totalled 1300¥. But today I received 10 months worth of insurance slips worth 5600¥ each ! Is there a reason for this ?
I must clarify that I do not work, I only live off my own savings. Surely this must be some kind of mistake ?
Thank you for your help.

  1. They may have accidentally changed your status, time to call ward office. Student to worker?

  2. This happened to me when I was a student too. Went to the city office and clarified that there must be some confusion. They agreed and told me they’ll send new vouchers soon, and i got the new ones within a week or so. went from 4300 yen to 1400 yen.

Edit: did it all in English back then since I didn’t speak Japanese, so that’s why I preferred to go in person.

  3. You most likely forgot to ask/they forgot to give you the deduced rate (since your income last year was most likely 0?) if you go in and ask for a 免除 they will give it to you

  4. Go to the city ward. Clarify that you are still a student and don’t have baito that earned you roughly 1 mil yen per year to maintain this exemption status.

They will give you the new slips. Maybe clarify your end date as an exchange student also.

  5. when I was a student all of us are paying ¥4300 except for one student. My teacher called the city hall and they explained it’s based on the yearly income. The yearly income has a threshold, i’m not really sure but that’s around 900k most of us were earning more than 900k.. The guy earned 3k less than the threshold amount since he was always absent.

But yeah try to contact/check the city hall. If you are worried you can raise this to your language school.

  6. They charged you the maximum by default because they didnt had any info on you. That happened to me, i paid it anyway and couple months later i received another letter asking for my banking info so they could process the refund. Ended up paying around that 1300 yens a month after refund.
