Questions about the Designated Activities Visa (特定活動)

Hi everyone,
I wanted to ask if anyone who plans on living and continuing to work in Japan but hasn’t been able to find a job by the time their contract expires has applied for this visa.
I’m curious to know if switching to this visa from an instructor visa will limit you in certain ways, such as keeping your Japanese bank account, etc. Additionally, will you still be able to travel back to your home country (for like 1-2 weeks) and return to Japan to continue job hunting without losing your residence status?
I know that the visa can be extended for up to 6 months, but I’m wondering if there are cases where it can be extended for up to a year.
Thank you!

  1. >by the time their contract expires

That’s not necessarily relevant. Yes, there is the requirement to not go longer than 3 months without engaging in your status of residency, which for a work visa holder is to be a registered resident + be employed. But immigration consider being a registered resident + job hunting in Japan, the same as working in Japan.

So, The question is when does your current status of residency (work visa) expire?

If you work visa still has time on it after your contract, then as long as you’re a registered resident + actively applying for jobs in Japan, then you won’t really have any issues until your work visa expires.

However, if your work visa expires the same date as your contract, then you’re going to have issues. Because I don’t think they issue the DA “job hunting” visa for work visa holders. I believe it’s only for graduating students (I could be wrong there though)
