Japan National Health Insurance Price

I recently switched to the National Health Insurance plan as I am self employed. When I went to the ward office, they mentioned it would cost a little under 40k a month. However, when I got the bill in the mail, it is 87k a month. Is this normal? It feels awfully high. Does anyone know the reason for this?

  1. Hmm…. I believe they base the amount on your income, but I’m wondering if they based the amount on your previous year income as an employee plus added on the higher premium for being self employed unto it….

Maybe you should talk to the contact person and find out what’s happening.

At the very least they would likely be able to talk you through the steps to arrive at that amount.

  2. Sounds about right.

14M is way above the average people make.
Your pension + insurance together should be around 133,000 per month.

  3. Even being under 40 so not having to pay the Long-term health care premiums yet, there are also some wildly fluctuating regional rates. I think I read Hiroshima is one of the worst and Shizuoka the most reasonable.

  4. Any chance that’s for more than a month, like it includes part of last month?

  5. No advice or tips or anything, just congratulations dude! You are young and rich, doesnt really matter how much you need to pay in taxes and stuff. I get 190 000 a month 🙂

  6. There a max you can pay per household and I’m guessing your at the max….

  7. National health insurance is 8% of adjusted gross income (income minus deductions). You are likely to receive more accurate answers at r/JapanFinance

  8. Is this that Japanlife thing where we pretend 13m is normal and most people aren’t on more like 3m 4m a year? If it is I’ll play:

Help I’ve found a new role it only pays 28 billion a day, will I die?
