Tip: How to run US Kindle app and JP Kindle app on same PC at same time

Normally Amazon will not let you easily switch between the US and JP stores when using the Kindle for PC app to read e-books and manga/light novels, it will force you to log out one and log in to the other, and that will automatically delete all your downloaded books. Which is a pain because my Japanese books are on JP but my Japanese textbooks (and other books) are on US.

The workaround for this: run them as two different Windows user accounts. Steps:

* Go to Start menu, search for and open “Other users”
* Click “Add someone else to this PC” then “I don’t have this person’s sign-in information” then “Add a user without a Microsoft account” then make up a name. I used “chiara-AmazonJP”. Below I will use “yournewusername” to refer to your chosen name.
* Go to Start menu, search for “System information”, take note of your System Name. Below I will use “YOURSYSTEMNAME” to refer to the system name.
* Run the Kindle for PC installer twice, once for your normal account, and the second time using the “runas” command to run it on your second account. Copy the installer to a location where any user can access it (I used c:\\temp). Search for “Run” in the Start menu, then in the Run box type:
* runas /user:YOURSYSTEMNAME\\yournewusername c:\\temp\\KindleForPC-installer-1.36.65107.exe (update the exe filename appropriately)
* Open your Start menu, search for “Kindle”. Right-click the shortcut and rename it to “Kindle US”. Make a copy of the shortcut and label it “Kindle JP”. Right-click properties on Kindle JP. In the Target field enter this:
* C:\\Windows\\System32\\runas.exe /user:YOURSYSTEMNAME\\yournewusername C:\\Users\\yournewusername\\AppData\\Local\\Amazon\\Kindle\\application\\Kindle.exe

That’s it! Now just log in with your Amazon US login in the Kindle US app and with your Amazon JP login in the Kindle JP app. You can run them side-by-side on the same screen at the same time and download and read both libraries. Just for fun I changed the UI language in my Kindle JP app to Japanese too (Tools→Options→Language).

If you try it let me know how it goes!

  1. Nice solution. Thanks for posting this tip.

    I had purchased a lot of Japanese Kindle Singles on my US account before getting a Japanese Amazon account, so I had to often switch between accounts to read my books.

    This will make things a lot easier.

  2. By the way, there were rumors on the Japanese net about the tragedy of the instantaneous disappearance of the Kindle Library that they purchased because they requested the Amazon support official to merge their US Amazon account with their JP Amazon account. It would be safer to use separate devices or use different accounts.
