My new boss smokes at my working place, what should I do?

The old boss is quitting and the new boss came in, I get headache whenever I smell it. I already spoke to the staffs and they said it’s difficult to bring that topic up to the boss. This is my new Job and I don’t want to quit. What can be done? I tried wearing KN95 but I can still smell it.

  1. Smoking in workplaces (outside of designated smoking rooms or outside smoking areas) has been illegal since 2020.

    Good details here: https://www.shares.ai/lab/roumu/3143051

You can always (subtly) print and place a copy of that article on his desk…..

Edit: Forget that – OP’s boss is smoking in a designated smoking room.

  2. Are they actually smoking in the office or are they smoking outside but you can still smell it when they come back in? That’s the distinction you’ve left here.

I very much doubt your co-workers would tolerate someone smoking inside the office, even in Japan.

  3. Are you talking about the residual smell on them, as they come in from outside or the smoking area? Or, they’re inside their office/at their desk smoking?

  4. >What can be done?

You’ve indicated that they’re smoking in a designated smoking room and it’s just the smell on their person that’s offensive to you.

Put simply there’s nothing you can do except changing jobs. They’re not exposing you directly to smoke or breaking the law.

  5. I used to work at a high school with a principal smoking in his office which is against the law… the agency in charge of schools received an anonymous letter about it and the school got a warning and he stopped..

may try an anonymous letter to the headquarters..

  6. He’s smoking in the designated smoking area … nothing you can do about it… if wants to smoke let him smokeb

  7. I had a similar problem years ago where my desk was near the designated smoking areas. I tried to protest but to no avail.

In the end I managed to move desk giving some b/s reason (can’t remember what it was) and since then it was much better.

  8. I don’t know what your boss is like. But you could straight up let him know that it’s affecting your ability to work. Bosses don’t want any lacking in the work place. Maybe it could help sway him to take up iqos or ploom.

  9. Assuming he (or she) is smoking in designated smoking areas and not in the office or anywhere you need to be and you’re getting worked up over their smell… you’re just going to have to deal with it or get another job. They’re not going to stop smoking and why should they

  10. You could request a air filter for the office!
Maybe to protect against the evil PM2.5
