What do you think of OWLS in Fukuoka City?

Thinking applying because I’ll be moving in with my family in a week or so. Any good or bad experiences, and what should I prepare for in particular?

  1. With my experience with OWLS I would tell you to not go there, especially if you can find better jobs with better salary. But most of ALT’s company are the same as well soo, I cannot be sure of what is best for you, it would depends of what you’re looking for

  2. They bought out all the contracts a few years ago, pushing out interac, which made the salary plummet further

  3. Not good, better than nothing. But very much not good lol. My schools when I was with them were pretty good. But any interactions or “training” with the company itself was torture lol, luckily there wasn’t too much interaction with the company.

  4. I worked for them for a year a few years back. At the time, the pay was 215,000 a month, every month. My commute was over the transportation reimbursement amount, so I was paying about 6,000 extra a month commuting to work. They were much more hands-on than other dispatchers (this is not a good thing).

The only good thing I will say, about them is that if you are a non-native English speaker who wants to be an ALT, this is the company that will hire you.

  5. Over 50% of the company is non native (mostly from the Phillipines, but Russians, Polish, Vietnamese as well). Typical dispatch company, they pay the bare minimum and try to act like they are doing you a favour. Management is rude and will try to yell at you if something goes wrong- if you stand your ground you will be fine…. The schools are in the poorer areas and the kids are generally nice. The JTEs are super busy but friendly and they hate OWLS as OWLS will yell at them when they dont get what they want. If you want a job and OWLS stays out of your life you will be fine, beware the absolute minimum salary though

  6. I have a friend who works for Owls, I can’t speak for the whole company but even though they are an ALT, they plan and run the English classes in their assigned junior high schools. They tell me it’s very stressful as the teachers don’t help much and they have 5 to 6 classes a day. That means planning for every single class every day.
