Arthritis treatment in Japan

I’m a bit overwhelmed at where to start looking. I have early-onset arthritis like most of the women in my family. I’d like to find a doctor to start treatment, but I don’t know where to look. What types of clinics should I be searching for to find arthritis treatments, or should I be looking at hospitals? I’m in Kanagawa but also to go to Tokyo if needed. My Japanese is N3-level. Thank you in advance!

  1. Pretty sure you want a 整形外科, and they’ll refer you to a hospital if necessary.

  2. Start with your naika/general practitioner. If you for some reason have a difficult to treat case they may refer you to a hospital, but for uncomplicated osteoarthritis a competent GP should be able to treat it. If it’s RA you will likely need to get a referral for a specialist.

  3. Most likely they will just prescribe a strong NSAID. Any doctor can do that, just go to a General Practitioner.
